Leederville House Addition
New Build - Addition
WEST LEEDERVILLE Western Australia

The artist's studio replaces a typical suburban garden on a medium sized lot and was designed to make the most of the northern aspect, forming one side of a courtyard garden.

The design transformed a jumble of structures and various ad hoc garden schemes into a simple new garden setting with the studio as its visual focus. The planning responds to an existing Federation period bungalow, garden walls and existing trees to produce a calm courtyard space and a lofty artist's studio.

The studio comprises a major work space, bathroom and storage loft. It has a polished concrete floor, walls designed to allow for hanging and fixing work and an operable glazed northern wall connecting interior and exterior.

The interior space is flexible allowing it to open into the courtyard space, or close itself from the outside whilst maintaining a strong visual link. Passive solar design is incorporated to create a bright work environment that controls solar access through roof overhangs and trees that successfully moderate the thermal performance of the studio.

The studio builds to the boundary on the south and east, maximising the size of the courtyard north of the studio. In place of the garden, a summer stone courtyard was laid out, making use of trees to provide summer shade.
