Finalist - Conservation or Adaptive Reuse of a State Registered Place - 2017

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) were keen to redevelop the long vacant cottages to Queen Victoria Street that were once part of the Artillery Barracks and provide accommodation once again for Defence personnel.

The challenge was to conserve and adapt the 10 heritage listed cottages to meet current accommodation requirements and provide a further 6 units on the site. The site is constrained by area and topography which led to a split level design outcome to better integrate with the site. The site was developed to provide amenities and breakout areas to support communal interaction between residents.

The outcome is a vastly improved presentation to Queen Victoria Unit, 16 high quality accommodation units and the conservation of a significant place.
