-- Architects Board Award

The Architects Board of Western Australia this week presented its annual Board Award for outstanding contribution to the architectural profession to heritage and award-winning Perth architect Philip Griffiths.

Jury Comments:
The award was presented by the chairman of the board, Bruce Callow, who said it was fitting that Philip Griffiths be awarded what was the highest recognition from the Architectural profession.

Philip’s active participation in the Heritage Council and in working with the communities involved with projects has raised the public awareness of heritage, its value to the community, to the architectural environment and to the profession.

-- Fremantle Prison Main Cell Block

Winner of the WA Architecture Award for Heritage

Jury Comments:
For excellence in conservation, exhibiting conservation techniques, and respect for the layers of extant fabric, reflecting the changes to the Prison from 1853 to 1991.

-- William Street Urban Renewal

WA Architecture Awards; Commendation for Urban Design

Jury Comments:
The revitalisation of this previously neglected streetscape on the eastern side of William Street in Northbridge has been achieved with a light touch.
A collection of ten buildings in the street have been upgraded and adapted to encourage a diversity of inner-city businesses and to provide a refreshed western portal to the Perth Cultural Centre.

The architect’s have enhanced the public domain through subtle interventions that build on the eclectic characteristics of the existing urban fabric. In particular, the introduction of opportunities for laneway activation have been carefully considered and provide a refreshing level of intervention that is an exemplar for elsewhere in the city. Public amenity has been improved through the reinstatement of awnings over the footpath, which along with the restoration of the building finishes, enhances the architectural presence of each building and encourages people to linger as they explore a variety of shopfronts along the street.

This project is a well-resolved example of the reinvigoration of an urban street that builds on the existing opportunities and constraints by the way of thorough analysis and a ‘less is more’ approach.
