In The Architects' Words: Subiaco Hotel is the key building on the important Hay Street and Rokeby Road junction. Along with the Regal Theatre, which is set diagonally to the hotel, the Subiaco Hotel is a part of the key elements that give the City its urban identity. This section of the City contains a high proportion of buildings constructed during the gold boom period which give the town centre its character. The hotel is the largest and tallest of the buildings made during this period, and even with the loss of its spire, it remains the City’s most impressive landmark. Subiaco Hotel comprises a two storey painted tuck pointed brick and iron roofed hotel (1897) in the Federation Filigree style, two storey brick and iron additions in a sympathetic style (1951), and single storey rendered brick and iron roofed café (1957 and 1993). Subiaco Hotel has suffered some fabric loss, but much of the underlying fabric is authentic, representing original and subsequent stages of development. Overall, the place retains a moderate degree of authenticity. |
