In The Architects' Words:
Parliament House was awarded to John Grainger Chief Architect of the Public Works and work commenced in 1902. Only the eastern section was built in the first stage and this included the two house chambers. Little was done to improve the chamber in the ensuing years and over 100 years after opening, the chambers no longer provided satisfactory working conditions for members and officers.
In concert with Connell Wagner, Philip Griffiths Architects prepared options for air conditioning the Legislative Assembly and schemes to increase the number of seats for an expanded house, together with the redesign of the chamber interiors. The work included displacement air conditioning, new floor staging, seating, desks, carpets and the like. The overall impact was an increased seating capacity, better sightlines, ergonomically designed desks and seating, and a new purpose designed carpet.
